Or ‘Truth or Dare’ as it was known in the U.S.
Madonna’s eponymous documentary which chronicles her life during the 1990 Blonde Ambition world tour – it was the highest grossing documentary of that time making nearly $30,000,000 at the box office and was relatively well received by the critics.
The film shows her increasingly tense relationship with her then boyfriend, Warren Beatty who is clearly becoming infuriated by the constant presence of cameras and it also follows her relationship with her dancers and their lives.
It is fair to say that, as a documentary film, it was the first to portray gay men in a positive and open way post the aids aftermath of the 80’s and featured the first kiss between two men on screen. It was open and proud.
Madonna, provocative as ever, took aim at every red line she could find, stared at the camera and placed her foot firmly over it. In a pre-internet age when the Kardashians and reality TV were only a distant nightmare away this was way ahead of its time.
The film features simulated fellatio & masturbation, tense parental relationships, upset Catholics (the then pope was well annoyed apparently), banned shows and a lot of drama. Well it would really… it’s Madonna.
